Voices of Placentia Bay
17 Patterson Dr, Placentia, NL A0B 2Y0, Canada
Voices of Placentia Bay is an evolving multimedia exhibit that celebrates the rich and colourful history of this area through the songs and stories of its people. Actually hearing their voices allows visitors to share their memories in a way that is immediate, meaningful and very powerful.
The exhibition shows how the isolation of Placentia Bay communities preserved many of the ancient ballads and spawned a vibrant song writing and storytelling tradition that both inspores and underpins contemporary music in the province.
Visitors to this exhibition will hear how songs and stories served as newspapers and as history books, as well as a source of entertainment for these communities. Through the voices of Placentia Bay, they will gain a very different perspective on significant social themes such as the deep connection between people and place, the trauma of resettlement and the impact of the Americans on this area.
For centuries, the songs and stories of Placentia Bay were passed from generation to generation. With oral traditions quickly being replaced by print and electronic media, this exhibition also plays a part in preserving and presenting this tradition, and in honouring the tradition bearers who have kept it so well.
