Fort Louis Archaeological Site

Fort Louis Archaeology Site (French 1691-1713) is located along Battery Road, on the flats of Jerseyside, Placentia, Newfoundland & Labrador.  It is situated north side of the Placentia Lift Bridge that cross the narrow gut between Placentia and Jerseyside.

Construction began in 1691 to protect the French residents of Placentia and the harbour. Protected by 26 cannons, by 1703 Fort Louis was a stone structure with tall, thick walls, which had to be regularly maintained because the proximity of the fort to the water caused continuous erosion from waves.

Today, low lying rock walls are visible, outlining the original structure of the former fort. From 2001-2011, active archaeology digs were ongoing, and many unique and interesting artefacts were uncovered. This area is no longer operational as an archaeological dig, but is open for visitors. Some of the artefacts uncovered from the Fort Louis site can be found in Placentia’s Archaeological Exhibit, which is located in the Voices of Placentia Bay building in the Town Square.
