In August 1941, during the Second World War, Winston Churchill, prime minister of the United Kingdom, and President Franklin Roosevelt of the United States met aboard U.S.S. AUGUSTA in Placentia Bay to discuss their countries’ common goals for peace. Their eight point declaration, known as the Atlantic Charter. was issued on August 14. It affirmed the rights of political self-determination, security and economic development for all peoples. These principles were endorsed by the 26 Allied powers in 1942 and after the war became a basis for the United Nations Charter.
